Hello!
So I finally started a blog. I probably would not have done so, except that in a few weeks I will find myself very far from home and needing a way to keep my friends and family updated about my life. I figure that writing a blog is like meeting everyone half-way: I'll write in it because I care, and you'll read it because you are interested in what I'm doing. At least, that's the plan :)
And where is it that I'm going? On August 11 I am leaving for Virginia! I am enrolled in Institute for Conflict Resolution and Analysis, where I will be working on a Masters degree for the next few years. It will take me about a week to drive there, stopping along the way to stay with friends and see the country! Truthfully, I might be more excited for the solo road trip than for anything else. If anyone has any books on tape they want to lend me for the drive, now is the time to speak up! I'll do my best to post pictures here.
Once I get to Virginia, I will move into a house about three miles away from the school where I will be living with other students from my program. I haven't met any of my roomies, or even visited Arlington before this, so I have no idea what is in store. Hopefully there will be no nasty surprises (like living in a basement full of spiders - PS: my roommates have been finding HOBO spiders in the house lately) and everything will go smoothly.
I basically I have no idea what to expect once I get there. I keep telling myself that if everything sucks, then at least I'm still in a really cool part of the country. I can always go to the Smithsonian and try not to think about all the really good opportunities I passed up in Tacoma (and I'm not being sarcastic about this), or the outrageous amount of debt I am accruing. I hope that I made the right decision!

I'm not a blog person so I probably won't check this often--so please keep posting updates on myspace or facebook. I'm super bummed that you're leaving WA, but also very excited that you're starting a new exciting chapter in the Amanda story. Best of luck and KIT, leah
hey Amanda! You're leaving Washington? Going where? I have a blog too. www.jake-ifer.blogspot.com. Good luck with everything.
I am sooo jealous! Virginia is beautiful, and you'll be just in time for a Fall full of lovely colors. My mom and I went back there last year to celebrate the birthday of Jamestowne. I plan on eventually moving out there to work at the Smithsonian. Yay.
Write often. I'll be reading!
AND DRIVE CAREFULLY!
Watch out for those Hobo spiders. They jump.
Good luck with all of that! Sounds exciting and scary at the same time! And careful of those hobo spiders...my aunt got bit by one a few Christmases ago and it really screwed up her had...she almost died...so be cautious.
But have fun with everything!!

Wow, you are very brave...that is farrrrrr from home! I'm glad you found my blog. I promise you will get so sick of all the pics I am going to post of Lincoln. Seriously, it is now Lincoln's blog...maybe a few guest appearances of my husband and me!
I'm happy for you. It takes guts to put daily life on hold and go for something you have interest in.
All my Love,
Byron
I don't know how often I'll manage to check your blog, but I do hope you'll keep in touch. I'm moving, too, but only to Bellingham, where I am joining the WWU Anth Dept. as a tenure-track faculty member.
I should have a webpage up on their site shortly.
